Source Water Protection Project States 2010
The Enabling Source Water Protection partnership is very pleased to announce the selection of two states as project partners in 2010. New York and Missouri emerged from a highly qualified pool of applicants as states best prepared to benefit from the partnership¹s technical assistance.
New York has requested assistance in focusing the state¹s innovative smart growth Cabinet on source water protection. With a strong record of inter-agency cooperation and an ongoing forum for interagency communication in the Governor¹s Smart Growth Cabinet, New York offers a unique opportunity to approach source water with a multi-disciplinary, multi-programmatic team.
Missouri is the home of the Meramec River Tributary Alliance, a model for bringing together a diverse group of organizations to focus on the protection of an entire drinking water watershed. The state seeks to expand on and replicate this model in other watersheds, and identify additional tools to support their work.
The Enabling Source Water Protection program assists selected states to align state land use and drinking water source protection efforts. The project team includes the Trust for Public Land, the Smart Growth Leadership Institute, River Network and the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators. Experts from each of these organizations will work with state personnel to identify opportunities and propose new strategies to achieve source water protection goals more effectively and efficiently. The project is funded under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency¹s Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water.
